Personal training in Portadown, built around you

I'm Ian Wilson. I've been training people since 2019, when I left my job to do it full time. I work out of Vo2 in Portadown with clients from Armagh, Lurgan, Banbridge and right across the ABC council area — one-to-one in the gym, online and hybrid coaching, strength and conditioning for sport, and nutrition advice alongside the training.

No two people get handed the same programme. I watch how you move, I ask what you actually want, and I build from there.

Who I work with

New to the gym

If you've never trained properly before, we start with form and with confidence. Knowing what you're doing and why is what makes you keep coming back.

Already training

If you've got experience behind you, we plan around the areas you want to see change, and I'll be honest with you about what's holding you back.

Playing sport

Football, hockey, boxing. I've run preseason strength and conditioning with local Intermediate A clubs — men's, ladies' and youth — coached youth football with a local academy, and worked one-to-one with players at first-team and international level.

Training with a date on it

A holiday, a preseason, an event. Introduction sessions, one-offs and short build plans are all fine — you don't have to sign up to something open-ended to work with me.

The one thing that matters more than any of the above: you have to want the change. I've got the knowledge, the experience and the tools to deliver it. That part's mine. Wanting it is yours.

About me

Ian Wilson, personal trainer, sitting in a squat rack at the gym

I've enjoyed training since my school days, and it was always the thing I wanted to do. When the chance came to get into the educational side of it, I took it — and then I kept going. I didn't want to stop at one badge. The more I know, the better the experience is for the person in front of me, and the better my own training gets too.

In 2019 I left my job to concentrate on personal training full time.

How a session actually works

I try to make sessions enjoyable, without the nonsense. I don't do rinse and repeat.

I chat with you and I watch you, and the programme comes out of that. A previous client came to me wanting to work upper body and chest. One session in, I could see he could lift heavy up top but only light with his legs by comparison. So we sat down and worked out a programme that gave him what he'd asked for — and built the structure underneath it for proper whole-body strength.

That's the job, really. You tell me what you want. I tell you what I'm seeing. We build something that does both.

What clients say

“I have really enjoyed the last couple of months working with Ian at strength and conditioning. It has benefited me, both on and off the pitch in hockey and football, where I can feel my fitness levels had greatly increased. I have also confidently learnt how to perform exercise effectively to prevent injury.”

— Keeley

“So happy with my results, wouldn't have been able to do it without the help and encouragement from Ian. Always there pushing me to work that bit harder (which I definitely needed). The app was really easy to follow which gave me the confidence to work alone, gained great knowledge of the different machines and equipment in the gym so now I can carry on what I've learned and continue with my health and fitness journey.”

— Julie

“I started in the gym with Ian in February 2022. Over the course of that year I made really good steady progress. But since starting a more structured programme at the beginning of this year everything has accelerated — hitting numbers that only a few months ago seemed like they'd be a target for closer to autumn. Not spring. Obviously you still need to take care of yourself outside the gym, but the difference 4 hours a week doing the supersets makes is incredible. I still have my takeouts — love a wee Chinese or pizza. Roll on the next one.”
